Robert Downey Jr Beef With Hugh Grant

Robert Downey Jr. should probably retire. Not because he's a bad actor, but just to make sure there's enough money left in Hollywood for other actors. You see, Downey is making bank. Every damn day. He even holds the record for the highest annual salary of any actor ever. But really, that should come as no surprise for the former Marvel superstar who launched his acting career at the age of five.

And even though Downey has retired his Iron Man suit, he's still a very rich man—here's everything we know about Robert Downey Jr.'s net worth.

Robert Downey Jr.'s net worth is an estimated $300 million.

Downey started acting in the early '70s, and in 1985, he had a brief stint as a Saturday Night Live cast member...but he was fired after just one year. Though he was canned from SNL, Downey continued his upward stardom, and as Looper reported, from 1985 to 1989, Downey appeared in no fewer than two films per year. In 1992, Downey portrayed Charlie Chaplin in the biopic Chaplin, and he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor and won a BAFTA Award for his role.

In 1996, Downey was arrested for speeding and cocaine and heroin possession, and he received three years of probation. In 1999, he was sentenced to a three-year prison term at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison after missing a court-ordered drug test. Downey spent about a year in the facility before he was freed.

After being released, Downey joined the cast of the TV show Ally McBeal, and he was later won a Golden Globe for his role as Larry Paul. However, Downey was again arrested for drug possession in 2000 and 2001, and he was fired from Ally McBeal and lost out on some film roles. In fact, the actor couldn't get insured to make a movie until 2003's The Singing Detective.

Downey has been sober ever since then, and he later starred in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Zodiac, and Tropic Thunder, which got him nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

But of course, Downey's major win came with Iron Man. In 2005, Downey landed the role of a lifetime as Tony Stark, the man behind the Iron Man suit. The film wouldn't debut until 2008, but that gave Downey enough time to make the film and rake in a reported $10 million for the role.

Just a few short years later, Downey was named Forbes' world's highest paid actor, bringing in $80 million in 2015— and it was all thanks to the MCU. Though he's dropped down in the rankings since then, Downey was still on the highest-paid list in 2018, sitting pretty at number 20.

In 2019, Downey earned a stunning $75 million for his role in Avengers: Endgame, making him one of the highest-paid actors on Forbes' 2019 list. Initially, Marvel paid Downey Jr. $20 million, but after the movie premiered he took home an additional $55 million on the backend. Endgame went on to make over $2.5 billion worldwide, and Downey's total Marvel loot is estimated to be over $200 million. He's also reportedly being paid $20 million for 2020's Dolitte, and he may make more money after the movie debuts as well.

Downey has certainly made a major comeback, and brought all the money in the world with him.

Correction — September 14, 2018, 7:50 a.m.: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that Robert Downey Jr. was richer than Tony Stark. Stark is, in fact, worth an estimated $12.4 billion.
